A stroke is similar to a heart attack. It occurs when a blood vessel (artery) that supplies blood to the brain,
bursts or becomes blocked by a blood clot or a piece of plaque that has broken off and lodged in the brain.
Ischemic Stroke - caused by a blocked artery.
Hemorrhagic Stroke - caused by sudden bleeding from an artery in the brain.
Third leading cause of death behind heart disease and cancer.
Second leading cause of death of women.
THE NUMBER ONE cause of disability leading to nursing home admissions.
Most strokes are preventable!
Education and simple, non-invasive carotid Doppler ultrasound screenings continue to be the best weapons in preventing ischemic strokes. Most adults cannot name even one warning sign of stroke. Learn the symptoms! Become "STROKE SMART"!
During a carotid Doppler screening, our highly skilled and qualified technicians apply acoustic gel on the neck and an instrument (transducer) is passed lightly over the skin above the carotid arteries. Information from the reflected sound waves, provide graphs and images that represent calcified and soft plaques as well as the flow of blood through the blood vessels. Although arteriography is the gold standard in identifying stenosis, Doppler ultrasound is safer because it does not use any radiation, dye injection, or introduction of a catheter into a blood vessel.
